June 30th Session Notes and Links:

Sorby Spiraling and Texturing Tool

  • Brian Maguire likes using this tool in conjunction with acrylic paints. He tells us to press hard and uses it a speeds of around 500 rpm.

  • Frank Huttenlock uses wood chips to burnish the spirals.

  • Dave Nowicki suggests Hartville Hardware for additional wheels, Crowne or Sorby.

  • Bob Crowe uses markers to color his spirals. The tool works best with end grain Dry erase makers have been used by Nick Agar according to Brian.

  • Tom Gall described how to sharpen the cutting teeth with a spindle to turn the spiral.

  • Bruce reminds us that speed counts when you want to vary the spacing of the embellishment.

Cup and Ball Burrs

  • Bob Collins tells us that MDI features Michael Kehs cup and ball burrs.

  • Tom Gall has purchased other sizes from Rio Grange and Otto Frei .

  • Learn the secret to better cutting by looking at the video about 20 minutes in- Brian Tom and Bruce weigh in!

  • Ron Brown’s Best also has various offerings for burrs and texturing tools, including a knurling tool. He also has chucks and other innovations, as well as videos.

  • Wires for burning…if you don’t make it yourself with Nichrome wire.

Carving

  • Flexcut carving tools, their removable blades work in power carvers.

  • Ryobi and Proxon power carvers are still available.

Beading Tools

  • From D-way Tools.

  • Bruce uses the beading tool and a Dremel cutting tool to great effect with silver gild cream.

Dyes and Stains

  • Tom Gall uses dyes and stains from Craft Supplies, Blick Art Supplies.

  • Brian uses India ink, available in at least 10 colors .

Shaded disks

  • Bruce showed us his bowl with inlay and referenced Janet Collins article in the AAW Journal (32.2:26-29) where she used brad point bits, a tenon cutter and hot sand to insert shaded disks into a bowl rim.
