2015 Hands-On-Workshop

2015 HANDS-ON-WORKSHOPS

The Bucks Woodturners again presents its unique H-O-W program of workshops taught by its own experienced members, volunteering their time and their shops for the educational benefit of club members.  There are sessions of interest that run the gamut from novice to expert.  Everyone can learn something to expand their capabilities. Examine the descriptions and the dates, and make your selections ASAP.  Sessions vary in length: half day or one day events.

This is the club’s major fund raising event of the year, and 100% of the funds are used to provide the interesting and informative programs that benefit our club members. The donation is $20 for each one-half day of activity and $35 for each 1 day activity. Also, Nancy Rourke is presenting a special 2 day class that is $60. Our club’s most experienced turners have generously opened their shops and are freely giving of their time so that others may enjoy the pleasure of improving their woodturning skills. Take advantage of this exceptional opportunity!  All dates are in March, April, and May  2015. 2015 HANDS-ON-WORKSHOP SCHEDULE AND DESCRIPTIONS

# 1       Introduction to Rosemaling                                                         Saturday, March 14 AND Sunday, March 15
            Nancy Rourke           Perkasie, PA

Rosemaling is the Norwegian Folk Art style of decorative painting that I use on some of my turned items such a bowls, plates and boxes.  The first day will be spent on 1. An introduction thru pictures and my pieces to Rosemaling, 2. Practicing the basic brush strokes that are used in doing Rosemaling, 3. Learning to mix the colors needed for a design,  4. Painting a beginning design on a flat board.  The second day we will again practice the strokes and then paint a design on a small turned plate or box lid that you will bring along to class (or I can supply a small plate).  We will work with artist oil paints and use paint thinner for cleaning brushes so if you have any allergies to these I suggest that you do not take this class.  I will also supply brushes, but I do suggest that you purchase your own since you will need them if you wish to continue to paint at home.  I will provide a supply list after you sign up for the class.
            4 Students, 2 full days                      $60

# 2 A   Make a Bowl From a Board                                                         Saturday March 14  9 AM
            Phil Hauser    Hainesport, NJ
It is possible to make a bowl from a flat board of wood.  The way it is done is to cut the board into concentric rings.  Rather than making straight cuts, the cuts are at an angle to the board’s plane.  Consequently, the top ring has a larger diameter than the bottom.  This allows the rings to be glued in a stack that can be turned into a  bowl.  In this course, Phil will show you how to lay out the rings and the angles needed to cut the board.  Then you will cut the board into rings and glue them up to make a rough bowl.  Phil will have a blank that he glued up ahead of time which will allow the student to finish the turned assembly and take home a finished bowl from a board!  Should time run short, you can take the bowl home to finish.
