Metal Powder Fillers
Ed Ryan and John Williams have used a brass filler to fill voids
and cracks in their bowls. Ed has also used an aluminum filler.
Ed mixed the filler powder with "thick" CA glue to make a paste,
then rubbed it into the voids. John filled the void first then dripped
"thin" CA glue over the powder to harden it in place. Depending on
the depth of the void, the processes may need to be done in layers.
The material can be sanded or turned smooth with the surface of the
object to create an "inlay "effect. Use on darker contrasting woods
or knots for a more dramatic effect. Finish your piece in the normal
fashion. If sanded to 600 grit, the material polishes brightly.
The powders can be purchased from "The Compleat Sculptor, Inc."
in New York City. They have a website with an on-line catalog, but
you have to call them to place an order. If you go to their on-line
catalog, these powders are listed under "Fillers".
